What you get

Same aluminum shutter, no electrical.

Manual roll shutters use the same aluminum slat curtain, side tracks, and head box as motorized — minus the motor. A geared crank handle inside the home turns a worm drive that raises or lowers the slat curtain through the head box. No 120V, no battery, no smart-home dependency.

Ideal for cottages, outbuildings, detached garages, and single-window residential installs where running electrical to the head box would cost more than the manual savings recover. The mechanical gearbox is rated for decades of seasonal use.

Upgradeable to motorized later by swapping the gearbox for a Somfy tubular motor and running a 120V line — the rest of the shutter stays.

What sets them apart

Four reasons buyers pick manual.

No electrical required

Cottages, outbuildings, off-grid installs — no power run, no panel work, no electrician on the install crew.

Mechanical reliability

Geared crank handle works the first season and the thirtieth. No motor to replace, no firmware to update, no app to debug.

Lower install cost

Skipping the motor, wiring, wall switch, and remote saves real money on small installs. The right call when budget is the constraint.

Upgradeable later

Decide motorized vs manual at install time, but know you can swap to motorized later — same shutter, gearbox swap and electrical run.

Where manual fits best

Three scenarios manual earns its place.

Single-opening installs

One window, one door, one opening. Operating it once or twice a day is fine — motorization adds cost without enough operational value.

Cottages and outbuildings

No nearby electrical, seasonal use, hands-off battery requirements that motorized would impose. Manual is the cleaner answer.

Vacation properties on a budget

Seasonal set-and-forget security where the shutter goes down at end-of-season and comes up at opening. Manual handles that pattern without complexity.

What it costs

Manual lands below motorized.

Manual roll shutters cost less than motorized on every opening — the savings are the motor, the wall switch, the remote, and the electrical run. On a single window or a cottage install, that math is real. On a multi-window residential install, the labour cost of operating manual shutters daily usually pushes the buyer to motorized within a season. We send a written quote with both options laid out so the comparison is easy.

  • Opening size (single window vs patio door vs commercial bay)
  • Slat gauge (standard or heavy-duty for security spec)
  • Powder-coat colour (5 stock or custom RAL)
  • Install complexity (drive distance, brick vs siding, masonry mounts)
